ABOUT PERU
Peru, the third largest country in South America, occupies 1,285,216 km². It is located in the central-western part of the subcontinent, along the Pacific coast, between 81º19’35» and 68º30’11» west longitude and 0º01’48» and 18º21’05» south latitude.
The Andes mountain range runs through Peru from north to south, creating a great geographic and climatic diversity, and forming 84 of the 115 life zones on the planet. Geographically, the country is divided into three main regions: the desert coast, the mountains with high plateau valleys, and the Amazon basin. However, since 1941, the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History has recognized eight geographic regions within the Peruvian territory: Chala (coastal up to 500 meters), Yunga (valleys between 500 and 2,300 meters), Jalca or Suní (4,100-4,800 meters), Janca (above 4,800 meters), Rupa Rupa (high jungle between 1,000 and 400 meters), and Omagua (lowland forest in the Amazon basin, between 400 and 80 meters).
Peru is politically divided into 24 departments and the constitutional province of Callao. These departments are divided into 194 provinces, which are further subdivided into 1,828 districts
HOW TO GET THERE
Unless you are traveling overland through South America, you will need to fly to get to Peru. Although prices vary depending on the time of year, how far in advance you buy, and the type of ticket, the major airlines seem to keep fares fairly stable, and tickets can easily be purchased online. Most people arrive at Lima’s Jorge Chavez Airport – there is an airport hotel, but it is a considerable distance from the downtown areas of Lima (Miraflores, San Isidro, Barranco) or even the old Centro de Lima. A taxi to downtown Lima takes 35-55 minutes.
HOW TO GET AROUND
Due to the vast distances in Peru, many travelers, both Peruvian and foreign, choose to fly to their destinations, as all major cities in the country are about a two-hour flight from Lima. However, most Peruvians still prefer to travel by bus, an economical option with routes covering almost the entire country. There is also the option of traveling by train, which can be an interesting and popular experience, although slower compared to bus travel.
ACCOMMODATION
Peru offers a wide range of accommodation, from luxury international hotels with prices comparable to those in Western capitals, to basic rooms or shared dormitories in hostels. In the last ten years, the supply of mid-range accommodation has grown significantly, driven by the increase in domestic and international tourism. In addition, camping is common in rural areas of the country, and in many cases it is free and safe, although there are few formally established camping sites.
FOOD AND DRINK
FESTIVALS, HOLIDAYS AND HOLIDAYS
Public holidays, Carnival, and local fiestas are major events in Peru, celebrated with great enthusiasm and openness, making them a draw for visitors. During these days, everything usually closes, including banks, offices, and museums. Major national holidays occur at Easter, Christmas, and October, in that order. It is advisable to plan ahead to avoid surprises. In addition to these large celebrations, almost every community has its own saint or patron figure, whose holiday is very meaningful to locals. These fiestas are usually very fun and authentic, with processions, music, dancing, and symbolic representations, such as villagers dressed as Spanish settlers with grotesque masks.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Few countries in the world offer such an impressive and diverse range of ecotourism, trekking, mountain biking and rafting as Peru. With vast wilderness areas, the world’s highest tropical mountain range, the majestic Amazon rainforest and an extensive Pacific coastline, Peru provides countless opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities and adventures in unique natural settings.
TREKKING AND CLIMBING
The most popular areas for trekking and climbing in Peru include north and south of Cusco, the Colca Canyon and the Cordillera Blanca. However, there are also other routes equally rich in biodiversity and culture in departments such as Cajamarca and Chachapoyas, which offer challenging but rewarding hikes. The desert coast, with its unique ecosystem, also presents exceptional routes to explore, with cities such as Lima, Trujillo, Chiclayo, Nazca, Pisco, Ica and Arequipa all having tourist infrastructure to facilitate visits.
CANOEING AND WHITE WATER RAFTING
Peru is one of the top destinations for rafting and canoeing. The rivers near Cusco, the Colca Canyon, Huaraz and Lunahuaná near Lima, offer exciting and challenging trips, with options for beginners. Cusco is considered one of the best rafting centers in South America, with access to rivers of various levels, from the Urubamba (levels 2 to 5) to the most intense rapids of the Apurímac River (level 6). On the Vilcanota River near Cusco, there is a 5 km stretch in Chuquicahuana that offers constant rapids (level 5) between December and April.
CYCLING
In Peru, cycling is a popular sport and one of the most common forms of transport, accessible to all social classes in both cities and rural areas. This has led to numerous bicycle shops and repair shops in the main cities and large towns. In addition, several tourist companies offer guided bicycle tours, which represent a great way to explore the best of the country. Huaraz and Cusco are two very popular destinations among cyclists
SURFING
Surfing in Peru has a history of thousands of years, with fishermen from Huanchaco and Chiclayo using traditional caballitos de totora, cigar-shaped reed rafts, to surf. Every year, approximately 12,000 surfers come to Peru, attracted by renowned beaches such as Chicama, Cabo Blanco and Punta Rocas, which are as competitive as the best in Hawaii and Brazil.
