DESCRIPTION
Amazon Explorer – Journey to the Peruvian Jungle:
A fascinating forest trail leads us to Condenado Lake, to explore it by canoe. Surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, the forest wetlands are the best places for bird watching and aquatic and terrestrial fauna. Entering on foot into the tropical forest, we will visit the wetland system around Lake Sachavacayoc. Bird species abound in the forests surrounding this beautiful body of water, and the lake is home to black caimans and giant otters. On the way back to our eco-lodge in the afternoon, there will be time to relax in a hammock or independently explore the trail system around the lodge.
ITINERARY
DAY 1: Flight to Puerto Maldonado and travel to the Ecolodge.
Upon disembarking from your flight in the jungle town of Puerto Maldonado, our staff will accompany guests on a fascinating 68-kilometer drive along the Tambopata River to the Ecolodge (23 km by road, 45 km by boat). After some time to relax and enjoy the lodge’s amenities, you will be invited on a guided walk as an introduction to the National Reserve’s rainforest. This introductory walk passes through a forest behind the Ecolodge, dominated by giant Brazil nut trees and the Chihuahuan. Mammals most frequently seen on this trail include the Pichico or Lion Monkey, Brown Capuchins, or Kingfisher Monkey, agoutis, pacas, blue morpho butterflies, trogons, toucans, and many other bird species. After dinner, a night walk will take place, where nocturnal animals and insects may be encountered or heard.
DAY 2: Hike to Condenado Lake
After an excellent breakfast and a short boat ride, we will walk through the trees to Condenado Lake to explore it by canoe. Shrouded in lush tropical vegetation, the forest wetlands are the best places for birdwatching and aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. A family of giant otters or giant river otters live in the lake. Birds abound, especially tiger herons, white herons, tuqui tuqui, shanshos, and the noisy black-headed donacobius. Remember to bring your hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun because there is no shade in the lakes. Back at the Ecolodge, after time to explore the surrounding forest or bathe in the Gallocunca stream, and an excellent meal at our restaurant, in the evening we will return to the river in search of caimans and other nocturnal species.
DAY 3: Hike to Sachavacayoc Lake
After breakfast, we will return to the boat again for a short trip downriver. We will arrive at a trail, where we will begin a long hike that will lead us to a spectacular hidden lake. On the route, we will cross streams and swampy areas, amidst the giant lupuna trees that abound in this part of the forest. During the hike, your guide will explain different aspects of the tropical rainforest and its fauna. Upon reaching the lake, we will enjoy our delicious lunch. Here, it is possible to find the elusive black caiman, macaws, and many other species of birds.
DAY 4: Cusco – Departure
Transfer from the Ecolodge to the city of Puerto Maldonado to take your return flight. The guide will support you in Puerto Maldonado, and will transfer you to the airport for your return flight.
