DESCRIPTION

According to legend, Cusco, the sacred city and capital of the Tahuantinsuyu Empire, was founded around the 11th and 12th centuries AD by the Inca Manco Capac, who emerged from Lake Titicaca.

Cusco was the center of government for the four extensive regions of the Inca Empire that came to encompass much of what is now Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile.

The Inca society was an admirable example of political and social organization, and had great knowledge of architecture, hydraulic engineering, medicine and agriculture.

On March 23, 1534, Francisco Pizarro founded a Spanish city on the city of Cusco, which was built on Inca foundations. Cusco is therefore a typical example of cultural fusion and syncretism, having inherited architectural monuments and works of art of incalculable value.

In viceregal Cusco, great revolutions against Spanish rule took place, such as that of José Gabriel Condorcanqui (Túpac Amaru II) in 1780, that of the Angulo brothers in 1813, and that of Mateo Pumacahua in 1814.

Cusco is characterized by its diverse folkloric events, among which the dance of the Chunchos, the Qollas, the Cusco carnival, the Dance of the Doctorcitos, and of the Negritos, the Contradanza, the Saqra K’achampa, the Saqsa Chilenos, the Panadero, among others, stand out.

Cusco’s textiles have ancestral roots, as does its ceramics. The artisans of the San Blas neighborhood, including the Mendívils, with their peculiar imagery, Edilberto Mérida with his sculptures, Antonio Olave and Gregorio Béjar with their Niños Manuelitos, enjoy general appreciation in artistic circles.
