DESCRIPTION
Amazon Adventure Macaw Clay Lick and Chuncho Parrots:
One of the most impressive spectacles in the Amazon is just three fascinating hours away by boat, in a place known as the macaw clay lick. It is here that hundreds of parrots and macaws of at least 10 different species congregate every day to feed, creating a spectacle of color and sound like no other in the natural world.
When we travel along the rivers we use boats with efficient motors designed to minimize environmental pollution. Our boats are made of fiberglass; no ancient trees have been cut down to make our boats, and we can travel long distances and show you large areas of the jungle during your stay.
ITINERARY
DAY 1: Flight to Puerto Maldonado and travel to the Ecolodge
Upon disembarking from your flight in the jungle town of Puerto Maldonado, our staff will accompany guests on a fascinating 68-kilometer drive along the Tambopata River to the Ecolodge (23 km by road, 45 km by boat). After some time to relax and enjoy the lodge’s amenities, you will be invited on a guided walk as an introduction to the National Reserve’s rainforest. This introductory walk passes through a forest behind the Ecolodge, dominated by giant Brazil nut trees and the Chihuahuan. The most frequently seen mammals on this trail include the Pichico or Lion Monkey, Brown Capuchin or Martin Monkey, agoutis, pacas, blue morpho butterflies, trogons, toucans, and many other bird species. After dinner, a night walk will take place, where nocturnal animals and insects may be encountered or heard. Approximately 50% of the animals in the jungle are nocturnal.
DAY 2: Hike to Condenado Lake and travel to the macaw and parrot clay lick.
After an excellent breakfast and a short boat ride, we will walk through the trees to Condenado Lake to explore it by canoe. Surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, the forest wetlands are the best places for bird watching and aquatic and terrestrial fauna. A family of giant otters or giant river wolves live in the lake. Birds abound, especially tiger herons, white herons, tuqui tuqui, shanshos, and the noisy black-headed donacobius. Remember to bring your hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun because there is no shade in the lakes. Back at the Ecolodge we will have lunch. After lunch we will return to the boat to continue the day. After two and a half hours of navigation upriver, we will reach the most anticipated attraction of this itinerary: the macaw and parrot clay lick called “El Chuncho”. You and your guide will have the night to explore the surrounding forest and riverbanks, looking for capybaras (the world’s largest rodent), as well as the largest mammal in the jungle, the tapir, or “sachavaca,” and – with luck – a magnificent jaguar. We will camp on the beach, near the clay lick.
DAY 3: Visit to the “El Chuncho” clay lick and return to Ecolodge
It is necessary to leave at dawn to reach the clay lick before the macaws. They come in search of salts, minerals and the digestive properties of clay. Many species of macaws and parrots visit the clay lick daily. We will return to camp and prepare for the return to Ecolodge, where we will arrive in time for lunch. In the afternoon, our trail system with its respective attractions awaits us, and at dusk you and your guide will go out in search of caimans and other nocturnal animals.
DAY 4: Cusco – Departure
Transfer from the Ecolodge to the city of Puerto Maldonado to take your return flight. The guide will support you in Puerto Maldonado, and will transfer you to the airport for your return flight.
