DESCRIPTION

This road network is distributed throughout a large part of the Peruvian territory and extends to five other South American countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, which offers opportunities for integration and joint research in different disciplines. These, in turn, formed the basis for the recognition of the Qhapaq Ñan by UNESCO to be included in the List of Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Although the regulations for Inca Trail Expeditions state that reservations must be made 5 days in advance, it is best to make the reservation well in advance. The average during high season indicates that 90 days before departure there is no more space, because only 500 people can go per day, and this is the only way to preserve the road network and the Machu Picchu Sanctuary from erosion and contamination.

Starting the trail we will see the ruins of Chachabamba, an in-situ stone altar that served to worship the sun and the mountains, still venerated by the local people. After visiting Chachabamba, we will continue the trail to the south and begin a gradual climb up the mountain, before entering a cloud forest with lots of vegetation, then the trail exits the forest and goes west, while we continue uphill in an open meadow. After walking for 3 hours, the trail descends into an amazing forest. Here we will find a beautiful waterfall, then we will reach the lower part of the Wiñaywayna ruins. We will appreciate the beauty of this place, complemented by information from our expert guide.

After lunch in Wiñaywayna, we will continue in the afternoon into the cloud forest, filled with bromeliads, orchids, and fern trees. As we walk this last part of the trail, we will pass many impressive features such as stone stairs and tambos (“resting places”). You will climb 60 stairs before reaching Inti Punku (“the sun gate”).
